Manuscript Submission Guidelines |
Thank you for choosing
to submit your book proposal to
Hay House. Over the years, we’ve found that it
isn’t
efficient to enter into e-mail correspondence or lengthy telephone
calls regarding proposals and the publishing process. Please read the
information below for advice. Information for Writers Most
writers, regardless of the genre they’ve
concentrated on, will want to share their work with the public by
having it published as a book. The first and most important thing is DO
YOUR OWN RESEARCH. Find out about the various ways of getting your book
published, the roles of publishers and literary agents, and exploring
the options of self-publishing and acquiring a distributor. The
Internet is great for this. Establish
who your ideal reader is, and what the market
is like for your book. Are there already other books similar to yours
available? The more research you’ve undertaken into the
market,
in addition to the processes involved in selecting and publishing a
manuscript, the better chance you have. The
following are the most asked questions about the Hay
House submission process, along with our answers. We hope this
information is most helpful to you. Are
you
currently accepting unsolicited manuscripts? What
if I
don’t have an agent? For Agents Only I’m
an agent looking to send Hay House some
material. How should I go about doing this? Editorial
Department Submissions For
further information, you may e-mail the editorial department.
WE DO
NOT SEND BACK MANUSCRIPTS UNLESS ACCOMPANIED BY POSTAGE. We will e-mail
you a response to your submission, however. What
should I do if I’m an agent who isn’t
based in the U.S.? What
types of books are you in the market for? Some
of
our best-selling
titles are: You
Can Heal
Your Life,
by Louise L. Hay; Secrets
&
Mysteries of the World,
by Sylvia Browne; The
Power of
Intention,
by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer; Yes,
You Can Be
a Successful Income Investor,
by Ben Stein and Phil
DeMuth. Note
that
we publish nonfiction
in the areas of Self-Help, New Age,
Sociology, Philosophy, Psychology, Health, Business, Finance,
Men’s/Women’s Issues, Inspirational Memoirs, and
Celebrity
Biographies. Subjects include social issues, current events, ecology,
business, food and nutrition, education, the environment, alternative
health/medicine, money/finance, nature, recreation, religion,
men’s and women’s issues, spiritual growth,
fitness. We
are
interested in a variety of subjects as long as they have a positive
self-help slant to them. No
poetry, quotation books,
children’s books, or negative concepts that aren’t
conducive to helping/healing ourselves, or our planet. Hay House publishes
hardcover and trade paperback
originals, and trade paperback reprints. We are no longer
accepting proposals for card decks. We average 50 titles a
year.
We pay standard royalty and publish an average of 12–18
months
after acceptance. Simultaneous (agented) submissions okay. We generally
report in four weeks on queries; six weeks on manuscripts.

Artwork Guidelines |
We
are always looking for talented artists,
photographers, and illustrators whose work is suitable for our books,
card decks, and gift products. If you would like to have your work
considered, send us nonreturnable samples such as color copies or tear
sheets. Do not send original art or slides. We will then keep your work
on file. When we need art or photographs, we look through our files
until we find an appropriate stylistic match, then we will contact you
if your work seems appropriate. Because of the volume of work we
receive, we regret that we cannot respond personally to each submission. If
your work is available to view online or if you have
an online portfolio, you may e-mail us a link to your work instead of
mailing us samples. Online portfolios offer a significant advantage in
that when we are searching for images, we often browse these portfolios
to see the entire spectrum of a person’s work available for
use.
You may e-mail your portfolio’s Web site address to the
attention
of Christy Salinas at our corporate office in the U.S. Please
note that we prefer work that expresses a positive
and uplifting feeling. Keep in mind that some of our recent titles have
been about such topics as spirituality, self-empowerment, feng shui,
metaphysics, angels and fairies, alternative health and fitness,
relationships, and personal growth. We encourage you to choose samples
to send that fit closely with these themes. We do not use cartoons or
caricatures or art that expresses dark, scary, or melancholy themes. If
you have an idea for a complete project, such as a
book or card deck, that includes both art and text, please contact an
agent as we do not accept unsolicited manuscripts and projects must be
submitted through an agent. Our
mailing address is: Christy
